The Elizabeth Chater Manuscript Collection dates from 1956-1970, with the majority of items undated. The collection documents Chater's own creative research and writing process. It consists of paper records, audio recordings, other items. Included in the collection is a manuscript copy of Chater's "The Bridge and the Sepulchre." Also included are manuscripts by noted science fiction authors Suzette Haden Elgin and Joan D. Vinge that reveal changes made to works before publication.

Suzette Haden Elgin (also known as Patricia Anne) was born on November 19, 1936 in Louisiana, Missouri. Elgin is the daughter of Gaylord Lloyd, a lawyer, and Hazel Wilkins, a teacher. At the age of eighteen, Elgin attended the University of Chicago from 1954-1956. During this time she married Peter Haden (whom later passed away) in 1955 and had three children, Michael, Rebecca, and Patricia.
